Amsterdam cuts maximum home rental period by 50 %

The demand for innovative hospitality concepts that incorporate home sharing experiences continues to grow. This fact is emphasized by the latest action taken by the Dutch government to reduce private home sharing in Amsterdam.

Starting in 2019, people of Amsterdam can rent out their homes via holiday rental platforms for only 30 days a year. The city council has thereby lowered the maximum rental days by half, from 60 to 30 days.

According to the local newspaper “Trouw”, 5000 apartments, houses and houseboats are constantly rented to tourists.

“I recognise that reducing the length of time is not the solution to city congestion but it will reduce the problems caused by tourists in some areas and will make it less inviting to use your home as a way to earn money,” said housing alderman Laurens Ivens.
