Zurich’s last hotel property with direct lake access is currently under construction and will open its doors mid 2019. HoCoSo advised and supported the owners, Corim AG, from the project start to the market and feasibility study, from concept development to ultimately the selection of its operator, Campbell Grey Hotels.

The former Hotel Alexander, the last hotel with unique direct lake access and its own marina in Zurich, was a well-known meeting spot in the area. Corim AG are the owners since 2006, and are currently realizing the ambitious plans of extending and renewing the property, a scheme already approved by the city of Thalwil in 2003. A scheme that prescribes an active public function for the property, as the people in the area wish for the hotel to remain a vibrant part of the community.

Alex is now set to open its doors mid 2019 and its intention to serve the community and become again the meeting place in the area is very much honoured by the facilities on offer and the operator chosen. Besides a private residence lounge and library, there are public spaces to be enjoyed by both locals and guests: an all-year round outside terrace with adjacent bar and restaurant to create a lively community-focused space directly on Lake Zurich.

About the hotel property

Alex Lake Zurich will be targeting the extended-stay market, offering both leisure and business guests, exclusivity and luxury. The property will feature 44 lake-view apartments, all fully equipped with kitchens and terraces.

According to HoCoSo’s owner and chairman Jonathan Humphries, who collaborated with Corim AG to determine the new concept of Luxury Extended Stay as the optimum positioning of Alex: “there is limited luxury supply in the Greater Zurich area, only accounting for 7% of the room supply, and hardly any luxury properties cater to the extended stay market. Alex is intended to fill this gap”.

HoCoSo’s operator selection process focused on finding the right operator to complement the new extended stay concept, and at the same time finding an operator geared-up to create experiences and run a community based food and beverage operation for all.

Jonathan Humphries adds: “Alex’s bar, restaurant and terrace will be unique and welcoming, totally geared to locals and hotel guests alike. The area is in need of a refreshing new place to eat and drink and Alex will create this experience in a smart but casual atmosphere.”

Guests are offered a spectacular sense of arrival by boat, as Alex’s yacht offers transfers between for example Zurich city centre and its private marina, and they are able to appreciate further water sports and spa facilities including sauna, steam room, fitness room, plunge pool and a treatment room.

Gordon Campbell Gray, the founder of Campbell Gray Hotels (selected operator) states: “Alex is a unique prospect as it holds wide appeal for business, tourism, locals as well as international guests. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to be in Switzerland and are delighted to introduce our distinctive brand to Lake Zurich.”

Hocoso, the expert in Extended Stay hotels, is proud to have been the advisor for this unique project on Lake Zurich.
